Statement from our juror Anne Berry
The ordinary, through the artist’s eye, becomes something more. Searching for glimpses of magic in everyday moments is my passion, and I am honored to have been able to spend time contemplating each of these images. Analogue methods give photographs a tactile quality and a sense of mystery often absent in digital images. While unable to judge the physical prints, I could get a sense of how, through the hand of the artists, these images became elevated through alchemy into much more than straight documentary records. It was an incredibly hard task to select only twelve images for the gallery and another twelve for the online exhibition, and I had to leave behind many compelling images. I’m grateful to all the participating artists for creating and sharing such lovely work.
In selecting the works for this exhibition, I chose images that worked together to make a cohesive statement. I considered both content and the execution of the idea. Of course, I wanted to feel astonished, to see something familiar presented in a new way. But an image lacks power if it is not also well-crafted. All the elements in a photograph should support the artist's intention. I looked for the mastery of light and shadow, skilled placement of color or form and for images where nothing in the frame distracts from the artist’s design. The images in Enchantment, even if the subject is simple, make the viewer linger, and wonder.
